Mazda brought major improvements for the Mazda 6 line. The looks, technology, and performance were added with refinements that only made Mazda fans elated. Focusing on the driving enjoyment of the Mazda 6 is the same formula applied by the company on all its upgrades and it ultimately made it more upscale both in design and the driving experience.

The 2018 Toyota Camry belongs in the same compact family car specie of the Mazda 6. It is only fitting to compare the two since both have received major redesigns.

Design & Style

The Mazda 6 has a new grille and LED headlights that highlight the exterior enhancements. On the inside, the revisions are more pronounced with the restyled dashboard trim. The materials used for the controls and the redesigned seats make it look and feel like a luxury car instead of a family sedan.

The new Toyota Camry has subtle changes outside but it undeniably has a sleeker look compared to the previous Camry. The cabin, on the other hand, is appropriately spacious. It may not have the same opulence when it comes to the materials, they nailed the essentials and it does look satisfying.

Technology & Safety

The infotainment system of the Mazda 6 is well-executed. The audio and navigation work well with both the manual control knob and the voice-control feature. Smartphone integration is also fast and quick-pairing. For its security features, the Mazda 6 is added with a surround-view camera system on top of the standard driver aids.

The audio-navigation system of the Toyota Camry is simple yet effective. There are well-labeled buttons but they are a bit chunky. It also tends to be slow upon start-up and the biggest concern is on the unavailable built-in navigation. It is also frustrating when it automatically mutes the phone as soon as you plug it in. For the driver aids, it comes with the standard safety features. The lane departure warning system is overly sensitive and many drivers will not like that the warnings cannot be turned off.

Performance

The 2.5-liter turbocharged engine of the Mazda 6 growls up to 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It feels stronger compared to other cars in the same category. Its responses to the driver inputs are responsive and it does have a superb throttle.

The Camry has a powerful V6 engine to produce 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. It gives very satisfactory oomph when speeding up but it is not impressive when driving around low revs. Steering is also not at par against the Mazda 6.

The Bottom Line

Basing on performance plus being stylish both inside and out, the 2018 Mazda 6 leaves the 2018 Toyota Camry behind. Although the Camry has a lot of impressive characteristics, it lacks the spirit that the Mazda 6 exudes.
