Mazda did their homework well when they redesigned its MX-5 line a few years back. The 2018 model, in particular, is quite notable and many would agree how fun it is to drive around even at low speeds. The price is also reasonable given that it is a decent sports car in its class.
For its ease of use and flexibility, Honda probably gets a lot of pats on the backs for the 2019 Honda Odyssey. It holds a list of incredible features so it is quite fitting to compare how it will hold up against the 2018 Mazda MX-5.
Design & Style
The most noticeable feature of the 2018 Mazda MX-5 is its top-down feature. You can convert from being a sports car and into a top-down car in seconds. This style is great for those who love to cruise around during summer. With its ergonomically-designed interior, one can easily get smitten and dream of having this car as their own.
As for the Honda Odyssey, it is a driver's choice in terms of a slew of features that are practically designed. The lateral sliding function of the back row seats is particularly helpful in terms of getting in and out of the vehicle. The layout of the interior buttons and controls are also logically arranged, reducing confusion.
Technology & Safety
Technology-wise, the MX-5 comes with an easy infotainment system. With an upgrade to a nicer, nine-speaker Bose stereo, there's no limit as to how entertaining every drive can be. As always, safety should be a priority and the driver aids of the MX-5 are well- addressed. It has a blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and very adaptive cruise control.
Unlike most vehicles, the Honda Odyssey has an 8-inch screen display for its infotainment system. It displays modern graphics and runs on the latest software system. The rear camera feature, as well as the intercom, is pretty useful. While it has adaptive cruise control, it tends to be lag and lacks a stop-and-go capability. It will be frustrating not only to the driver but more on the vehicle following it.
Performance
The 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque from the 2-liter four-cylinder engine of the 2018 Mazda MX-5 is enough to have an incredible ride on any surface. The presence of many midrange torques allows for a pleasurable and easy acceleration.
As for the 2019 Honda Odyssey, the strong V6 engine is impressive which provides plenty of power for precise steering and still give room for stable handling. It has, however, a little on-center feel but is responsive with smaller steering inputs.
The Bottom Line
Overall, the 2019 Honda Odyssey may have a slightly better performance but it definitely lacks the appeal that the 2018 Mazda MX-5 has. If you are looking for a ride that looks good, small, but still delivers, then the MX-5 is a definite winner!
