There are so many crossover SUVs to choose from that is quite challenging to pinpoint which one has the best specs and features. Two almost-similar cars in this category are the 2019 Mazda CX-5 and the 2019 Toyota Rav 4. Both are popular models and have a huge following among many car enthusiasts. With the latest offers for this model year, the competition has gone bigger and it is high time to finally find out which one was enhanced for the better and which one lags behind.
Design & Style
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is a mesmerizing car with a conspicuous sloping nose treatment. With its white paint, the massive grille became a little too inconspicuous. It also has a lot of optional features that elevates the interior cabin. Nappa leather upholstery and genuine wood trims are nice additions and strikingly make the CX-5 look luxurious compared to the Rav 4.
As for the latest Rav 4, the exterior design has been added with creased octagons and planes that make it look distinct. The boxy exterior makes way for a roomier cabin with slender front pillars that allows for easy visibility. All in all, the Rav 4's interior is well-built except for the too smooth upholstery that looks and feels artificial.
Technology & Safety
On top of the advanced infotainment system, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 is built with the new i-Activsense safety features. It is an advanced driver-centered monitoring system that is excellent at determining whether the driver is fit to drive or not. Of course it still has the latest safety features like the blind-spot monitor and lane departure warning system. Because of all this technology, the new Mazda CX-5 leaves behind a few cars in the same class.
The main problem with the technologies applied to the Rav 4 is that it is so all over the place. The audio and navigation systems look great on the outside but the graphics and user interface are all outdated. Even the sound quality of its audio system is not that great. Thankfully, it comes with driver aids that work well.
Performance
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 comes in a four-cylinder, the 2.5-liter engine can reach a maximum of 186lb-ft of torque and 187 horsepower. It is enough to propel the car at a decent 8.7 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph. the brake system is also impressive, bringing the car to a smooth stop due to its moderately firm pedal.
The latest Rav 4 sports a 2.5-liter engine that delivers 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Even with this power, the acceleration is underwhelming. It can go from 0-60 mph within 9.1 seconds, a bit slower compared to that of the CX-5.
The Bottom Line
The 2019 Toyota Rav 4 looks great and has all the right features inside the cabin and under its hood. This is why it is so disappointing that it cannot perform as well as the 2019 Mazda CX-5. In terms of design, technology, safety, and performance, the CX-5 is way on top of the Rav 4.
