The 2021 Honda Insight has lots of space in its interior, excellent fuel economy and wonderful safety scores. But is this enough to beat the 2021 Mazda 3, a car which has received rave reviews for its superb handling, posh interior and AWD availability?

Design & Style

The Mazda 3 can be purchased in the form of a sedan or hatchback, both of which look great. It has 3 model lines which are engine based, and these are Premium, Select and Preferred. Each model features a shield shaped grille in front that is forward canted with curves that are sleek and soft along the sides. It produces a wonderful silhouette yet the hatchback variant has prominent roof pillars which make it appear larger. The cabin is covered in padded materials with polished metallic trim.

The Honda Insight can carry a maximum of 5 passengers and does so with flair. It has rear seats which split fold, and in the exterior the wheel arches look elegant. Although its roofline and proportions resemble the Civic, its overall shape is unique, and within the cabin passengers will be presented with a V shaped dashboard and comfortable seats.

Technology & Safety

The Honda Insight is one of the safest cars in the world. Every crash test sent its way has been aced, and it captured both a five star rating and Top Safety Pick from the IIHS. It has emergency automated brakes, lane control that is active, the ability to identify traffic signs, blind area monitoring and cruise control which is adaptive. Luxuries within its cabin include a single USB port, five inch infotainment displays (which are not touchscreens), Bluetooth support and a moonroof.

The Mazda 3 matches the Insight when it comes to safety. It too has received a five star rating from the NHTSA along with a Top Safety Pick designation. It has all the safety countermeasures that can be found in the Honda, including high beams which are automated and the ability to automatically monitor the attention of the driver. It also has parking sensors and can provide assistance with getting out of traffic jams, and luxuries within its cabin include powered seats that can be adjusted 8 ways, a sunroof, power lumbar, leather upholstery and a steering wheel that is wrapped in leather.

Performance

The Mazda 3 is equipped with an inline 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 155 horsepower.  The Honda Insight is also equipped with an inline 4 which can generate 151 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

The Insight and Mazda 3 are tied when it comes to safety and performance. However, the Honda's buzzy engine, thin bottom seats and lack of good features in the base models make the Mazda the winner.
