The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is a polished SUV with potent powertrains, excellent proportions and an active suite of safety features. But how does it compare to the 2021 Fiat 500X, a compact SUV with a lovely Italian design, excellent tech and standardized all-wheel drive?
Design & Style
The Fiat 500X combines classic design cues with a contemporary touch to achieve an impressive visual flair. It has a hatchback outer frame with a butch fascia in front and painted trim in the Sport editions. Within the cabin, passengers will be presented with a dashboard that is bulbous which contains a seven inch touchscreen that is elevated, and the upholstery comes in a broad array of colors all of which are attractive.
The Mazda CX-30 is refined and roomy. It too has an elevated hatchback frame and the roof descends gracefully into the rear which tapers inward. The interior is upmarket in quality and presentation without being ostentatious, and those who have test driven it have stated that it is much quieter than competing sport utility vehicles. It can comfortably seat 4 adults and offers twenty cubic feet worth of space for cargo.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda CX-30 is well equipped with active safety features to protect its passengers. This has resulted in it acing every crash test given to it by the NHTSA and IIHS, and its key protective functions include automated emergency brakes, cruise and lane control, excellent external vision and multiple airbags. Comforts within its cabin consist of nine inch displays, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and climate control which is dual zone.
The Fiat 500X has many of the active safety features found in the Mazda, but charges extra for them. Furthermore, emergency automatic brakes are not found on base models, and are only available with the Sport and Trekking trim levels. It also has driver assistance and luxuries within its cabin include seven inch displays, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, heated seats and leather upholstery.
Performance
The Fiat 500X is outfitted with an engine that can generate 177 horsepower with 210 pounds of torque that is wedded to a nine speed automatic transmission. The Mazda CX-30 is equipped with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 186 horsepower that is wedded to an automatic six speed transmission, which enables it to accelerate from zero to sixty in just eight seconds.
The Bottom Line
The refusal of Fiat to install emergency automatic brakes in the base 500X is a major failure on their part, as this is lifesaving technology, and this combined with their fumbling gearbox makes the Mazda CX-30 the winner.
