Both SUV enthusiasts and auto industry pundits have praised the 2021 Mazda CX-30 for its magnificent proportions, standardized safety suite, and spacious interior. But can it best the 2021 Ford EcoSport, a compact sport utility vehicle with excellent cargo space, great fuel economy and a very affordable price tag?
Design & Style
Despite being the smallest SUV in Ford's lineup, the EcoSport packs a punch. It has all wheel drive and comes with four trim levels, which are Titanium, S, SES and SE. The cabin comes with a variety of materials, most of which are low in cost, which shouldn't be surprising given its price tag. It has 4.2 inch displays and sits on sixteen inch wheels with cloth covered seats that provide good back support.
The Mazda CX-30 is gorgeous, with a polished exterior and interior that is well appointed in every way. Many of the materials within the cabin are soft touch and a lot of drivers love the glossy black plastic. It makes excellent use of space, so much so that those over six feet tall will have no trouble fitting in, and there is about 20.2 cubic feet worth of space for cargo.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda CX-30 has done an exemplary job on both its NHTSA and IIHS crash tests. This is because it is equipped with the latest protective features, which include cruise control that is adaptive, blind area monitoring, emergency automated brakes, lane control that is active and multiple airbags. Comforts within its cabin include 8.8 inch displays, interface for smartphones, heated seats, climate control which covers two zones and vents in the back.
The Ford EcoSport received a 4 star safety rating overall, with only three stars for its rollover protection. It has no emergency automated brakes, which is a major failure, and to make matters worse, its back vision is lackluster. It does have blind area monitoring, and perks within its cabin include dual USB ports, cloth upholstery, satellite radio, and powered eats that can be heated.
Performance
The Ford EcoSport is equipped with a turbo 3, 1 liter engine that can generate 123 horsepower, which is wedded to an automatic six speed transmission. The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is equipped with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 186 horsepower that is also connected to an automatic six speed transmission.
The Bottom Line
We've all heard the saying that "you get what you pay for," and this is definitely the case with the Ford EcoSport. It has an extremely low price tag, but it also lacks emergency automated brakes, no active safety features and its performance is pathetic, giving the Mazda CX-30 an easy victory.
