The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is giving its opponents a tough time to climb up to the top spot of the compact SUV class. This one has sporty handling and upscale interior - qualities that are common in more expensive luxury rides. It also has a long list of standard features and gets an outstanding score in terms of safety.

As for the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox, it also boasts of a long list of features, and has that edgy and comfortable seating configuration inside. It carries no major changes though, when compared to its predecessor.

Design & Style

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is gifted with a great amount of cargo space that reaches 60 cubic feet in measurement when the back seats are folded down. The SUV can seat two adults in front, and three average-sized adults at the back. There is a middle seat in the second row which can seat a child comfortably. There is ample headroom on both rows, even in trims where there is a moonroof included. The ride feels and looks like a luxury vehicle, containing some of high-end materials that are common in expensive luxury cars.

There is about 64 cubic feet of space at the trunk area for the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox when the back seats are folded down. Just like the CX-5, it seats tall passengers comfortably in front, while three kids can seat at the back without any problem. Design quality wise, it is just so awful since this one has plenty of hard plastics in the cabin.

Technology & Safety

The Mazda CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch touch screen for its infotainment system. It is equipped with an Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. It displays crisp graphics and responds quickly to user inputs. There is also a rotary knob that can be used to control the system. Other standard features are two USB ports, four speakers, Wi-Fi hot spot, HD radio, Mazda Connected Services, and Bluetooth. It has a long list of safety features, as promised, and this includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, forward automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning.

The Equinox, meanwhile, is gifted with a seven-inch touch screen for its infotainment system. It has smartphone integration, Bluetooth, and voice recognition. Temperature, audio, and volume adjustments can be made using the physical buttons and knobs at the center stack. Safety features include pedestrian detection, automatic high-beam headlights, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning, among others. This list is not as impressive as those found in the CX-5.

Performance

The CX-5 has a base engine that can accumulate up to 187 horsepower. The other trims carry turbo-fours that can power between 227 and 250 horses. These numbers for the Mazda are better than the 170-horsepower output for the Equinox's standard engine.

The Bottom Line

There are plenty of things to like about the 2021 Mazda CX-5. It is crafted sturdily and has some bits and pieces which are common to luxury cars. This is indeed a better option over the Equinox.
