The 2021 Mazda CX-5 challenges its opponents under the compact SUV class. This ride knows how to impress with its great handling and potent engine options. That refined interior is typical to luxury rides, but it manages to provide it for its avid followers.
When compared to its predecessor, the 2021 Hyundai Tucson does not carry any major change. This is praised for its long list of standard features, and its promised composed handling and balanced ride.
Design & Style
The 2021 CX-5 is one ride with the luxe factor. It is gifted with an upscale cabin, with all the materials that are only common to more expensive luxury cars like Audi and Porsche. This has plenty of cargo space to offer inside as well. The back expands from 31 cubic feet to 60 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. The well-cushioned seats provide comfort for its occupants, whether tall adults, or small children.
When it comes to the Tucson, expect about 60 cubic feet of cargo area when the rear seats are folded down. Having that same space as the CX-5 makes it great in this aspect. Note, however, that it lacks the class that the Mazda exudes. This one has numerous hard plastics in the cabin, and is left with cloth upholstery as a standard.
Technology & Safety
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has updated its infotainment system to include a 10.25-inch touch screen (with the previous eight-inch configuration). It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto flawlessly. It also has a Wi-Fi hot spot, HD radio, four speakers, Mazda Connected Services, two USB ports, and Bluetooth. It has a long list of reliable safety features like the adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, and forward collision warning, among others.
The Tucson, on the other hand, maintains its choice of using a seven-inch touch screen for its infotainment system. It can be found within reach, thus making outputs easier to see while driving. Additional knobs and buttons are provided for climate and audio controls. It also has six speakers, a Bluetooth, USB port, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Its safety features include a rearview camera, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and driver drowsiness monitoring. This list is shorter than the one found in the CX-5.
Performance
The 2021 base four-cylinder engine for the CX-5 naturally aspirates 187 horsepower. This can go as high as 250 horsepower for its turbocharged four-cylinder setup. The Tucson's engine configurations, on the other hand, are as not as powerful as that of the Mazda. It can only reach up to 161 horsepower for its four-cylinder 2.0-liter version, and 181 horsepower for its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
The Bottom Line
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 looks and feels lavish inside, and has all the right safety and technology features that you can count on. You can rely on it for its power too. The Tucson just bows down to this ride.
