The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is praised for a lot of noteworthy features, including a long list of advanced safety standard features. This one has a powerful engine choice and produces excellent gas mileage ratings. It also has an opulent cabin, and now launches the new Carbon Edition trim.
For the 2021 Honda Passport, there is a strong V6 engine that awaits its users. The roomy and upscale cabin is one to look forward too. It is now gifted with an eight-inch touch screen, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard.
Design & Style
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 has 71.2 cubic feet of space when the second and third rows are folded down. It can seat up to seven people, which can be configured to six if you go for captain's chairs on the second row. It has six-way power adjustments for the driver seat, and comes standard with cloth upholstery, and heated front seats too. The setup is upgraded to real wood inlays and aluminum accents for higher trims. All the nice materials for the cabin give it a luxurious feel, similar to a ride from Lexus or Audi.
In the case of the 2021 Honda Passport, the cargo area expands depending on how the seats are positioned. There is about 41.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat, and 77.9 cubic feet once these seats are folded. The two-row SUV can seat five on its cloth-upholstered cabin. The seats are somewhat firm, making them a pain during longer drives. It is best to seat two adults at the back. The SUV is lined with soft plastics, but it does not feel luxurious.
Technology & Safety
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is gifted with a spectacular and reliable partnership between the Mazda Connect Infotainment system and its 10.3-inch touch screen display. This one flawlessly integrates Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The setup has physical controls that support the already user-friendly touch screen. It has tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, Wi-Fi hot spot, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and six speakers. It has a long list of safety features which includes rear cross traffic alert, pedestrian detection, rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning, among others.
When it comes to the Passport, there is not really an intuitive infotainment system inside. Some buttons on its eight-inch touch screen are overly sensitive. It has seven speakers, a USB port, Bluetooth, and integrates Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto. The list of driver aids does not compare to that of the CX-9 since it only has stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, rearview camera, road departure mitigation, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning.
Performance
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 gets its power from a four-cylinder, 2.5-liter engine that is turbocharged to aspirate 227 horsepower if you use regular gas. That goes up to 250 horsepower if you opt to use premium gas instead. Â For the Honda Passport, it gets 280 horsepower for its V6, 3.5-liter engine. This one does not shift smoothly though.
The Bottom Line
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is a handsome ride with all the amenities you will want in an SUV. This ride is large enough to accommodate your needs. It definitely defeats the 2021 Honda Passport.
