The 2022 Mazda 3 impresses drivers with its controlled handling, premium interior and remarkable style. How does it compare to the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage, a compact car with standardized safety tech, excellent fuel economy and a wonderful price tag?

Design & Style

The Mirage comes in the form of a sedan or hatchback with one hundred and fifty one inches between the bumpers. Despite being one of the most affordable cars in the world, the engineers managed to install a seven inch display that has advanced compatibility with smartphones.  The latest edition also has a new grille, wheels and lights. The cabin is basic, but those who upgrade to the Carbonite variant will receive trim that resembles carbon fiber.

The Mazda 3 can also be purchased in sedan or hatchback form. It has a sleek shield type grille that is forward canted with gentle curves along its flanks. It produces a classical silhouette and the hatchback is distinctive for its thickened roof pillars. The cabin is classy with materials that are upmarket and padded to provide maximum comfort.

Technology & Safety

When it comes to safety, the Mazda 3 is an award winner. It captured the illustrious Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS along with a perfect five star NHTSA rating. Just a few of the safety features that passengers will receive include automatic alerts for cross traffic in the rear, the ability to monitor the attention of the driver, road side recognition, pedestrian detection, emergency automatic brakes and assistance with traffic jams. Luxuries within its cabin include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, rotary controller, keyless ignition, power windows and doors and a sound system with eight speakers.

The Mitsubishi Mirage is also equipped with the latest impact avoidance technology. It has many of the features found in the Mazda, such as blind area monitoring, along with high beam style headlights which are automated. Although it received a good overall rating from the IIHS, it got marginal scores for its front overlap crash test.  Amenities within its cabin include keyless entry, Bluetooth support, and powered features.

Performance

The Mirage is one of the slowest cars on the market. It is outfitted with a three cylinder engine that can only generate 78 horsepower with 74 pounds of torque, but it has a CVT (continuously variable transmission) that enhances its fuel economy. The Mazda 3 is equipped with an inline 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 155 horsepower.

The Bottom Line

The biggest advantage that the Mitsubishi Mirage has is its low price tag. It is extremely slow, not designed for long distance travel, and is not as safe as the Mazda 3, which makes it the winner.
