The 2022 Nissan Altima has received praise for its adroit handling, impeccable powertrains and ultra-comfortable front seats. But is it good enough to compete against the 2022 Mazda 3, a high end automobile with a superb interior, masterfully engineered chassis and host of safety features?
Design & Style
The Mazda 3 is compact yet powerful. Buyers get the option of a sedan or hatchback both of which can use all wheel drive. Additionally, the high end Carbon Edition is now available which allows buyers to get fabulous features such as red colored leather, black cabin elements and Polymetal Gray style paint. The cabin is comfortable to sit in especially when you get the leather seats which can be power adjusted and heated.
The Altima is one of Nissan's top selling models. The latest edition is moderately sized and highly fuel efficient, without compromising its performance. All-wheel drive has been made available and buyers now have the option of the Midnight Edition, which incorporates dark accents in the exterior but can only be acquired in its SR trim. Other new features include heated outer mirrors and LED based turn signals.
Technology & Safety
Each Nissan Altima comes with features such as frontal impact warnings along with emergency automated brakes, blind area monitoring and headlights with high beam management. It also has a proprietary feature named ProPilot Assist which provides a degree of semiautonomous operation. Luxuries within its cabin include a Bose sound system with 9 speakers, navigation that is built in, eight inch touch displays and the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The Mazda 3 has received a perfect safety rating via the NHTSA, who is impressed with its superb engineering and array of countermeasures such as pedestrian detection, emergency automated brakes, lane management, and high beam style headlights which are automated. It also uses stop and go technology and perks within its cabin include satellite radio from SiriusXM, a Bose sound system with twelve speakers, rotary knob, nine inch touch displays, climate control and the option of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
Performance
Those that go all out can purchase the Mazda 3 with a 2.5 liter engine that is turbocharged and capable of generating a whopping 250 horsepower. The Nissan Altima also has a turbocharged variant which is four cylinder, 2 liter and capable of generating 248 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
Both cars are evenly matched when it comes to performance, being nearly tied in terms of maximum horsepower. However, the Mazda 3 has captured the NHTSA's highest safety award while the Altima hasn't, and those who've test driven the Nissan have complained of its noisy powertrain and the wheel/tire combo which erodes ride quality, making the Mazda 3 the winner.
