The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a moderately sized vehicle with sporty handling, turbocharged power and standardized all-wheel drive. How does it compare to the 2022 Honda HR-V, an SUV which is popular for its affordability, efficient interior and respectable handling?
Design & Style
The Honda HR-V is exceptionally versatile and capable of seating five people. It comes in 4 trims, which are EX-L, Sport, LX and EX. When the back seat is folded down; passengers will have access to substantial storage space. Buyers also get the option of all or front wheel drive but it doesn't offer much ground clearance, which means off-roading should probably be avoided. That being said, its all-wheel drive makes it quite surefooted even on slick surfaces.
The Mazda CX-5 can also hold five. Its exterior is covered in crisp lines along with confident curvature. All-wheel drive is now standardized on every variant. Its newest features for the year include revised LEDs and additional wheel designs. Passengers inside the cabin will be presented with a horizontal dashboard arrangement and its engine has been paired with a six speed automatic transmission to provide greater responses when driving.
Technology & Safety
Mazda is highly regarded for the safety of its vehicles and the CX-5 excels. It has earned both the Top Safety Pick+ courtesy of the IIHS along with a perfect 5 star review from the NHTSA. This is because it has every modern feature known to man, from adapted cruise control to automated emergency brakes, blind area monitoring and more. Amenities within its cabin include ten inch displays, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, leather upholstery, sunroof and powered lift gate.
The Honda HR-V also did a good job on its crash tests. The difference is that Honda failed to include the impact avoid technology within the Sport and LX trims, and the IIHS refused to give it the prestigious Top Safety Pick thanks to its crappy headlights. Still, it is equipped with many of the features found in the Mazda, such as activated lane control and emergency automated brakes, and amenities within its cabin include a five inch infotainment screen, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, moonroof, and upgraded audio.
Performance
The Honda HR-V comes with a four cylinder engine that can generate 141 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 8.6 seconds. The Mazda CX-5 is powered by a turbo 4 engines that can generate 227 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in 7.5 seconds.
The Bottom Line
Aside from its inferior horsepower, the Honda HR-V has a number of other weaknesses. It doesn't offer a manual transmission, emergency automated brakes are not standard, but worst of all, its crappy headlights could potentially endanger lives at night, and this makes the Mazda CX-5 the winner.
