The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a moderately sized SUV with good looks, standardized AWD and superb handling. But can it beat the 2022 Kia Sorento, a sport utility vehicle with hybrid powertrains, a roomy cabin and impressive performance?
Design & Style
The Kia Sorento is also moderately sized with 3 row seats. It can hold seven people and now offers the option of a hybrid plugin powertrain. Buyers can also install X-Line based add ons, and the touch display has been enlarged to ten inches. It displays a razor mesh style grille in front with metallic fillips, and there is plenty of space for luggage and groceries. USB ports have been installed within the back of its seats which is a nice touch.
The latest Mazda CX-5 comes with a number of new features, such as enhanced LED headlights, more wheel design choices and a six speed automatic transmission that has been recalibrated for more responsive feedback. The front strut dampers have also been stiffened and the vehicle offers more precise steering with handling that is taut. The cabin is posh and covered in materials such as nappa leather and earthy wooden trim.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda CX-5 has aced every crash test thrown its way, earning a perfect five star review from the NHTSA along with an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. It comes with features such as standardized automated brakes, adapted cruise control, airbags and activated lane control. Comforts within its cabin include a camera with surround view, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, powered seats, multizone climate control and ambient lighting.
Meanwhile, the Kia Sorento only earned a four star NHTSA rating, and though the IIHS did bestow a Top Safety Pick, its standard headlights were still rated poorly. It does come with many of the features found in the Mazda along with parking sensors, braking support and blind area monitoring, but the roof pillars and third row seat partly obstruct the rear view. Interior comforts include powered and heated seats, climate control, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android auto and multizone climate control.
Performance
The Kia Sorento is powered by a turbo 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 281 horsepower, which enables it to accelerate from zero to sixty in 6.3 seconds. Those that purchase the Mazda CX-5 will generate a turbo 4 engine that can generate 227 horsepower which enables it to accelerate from zero to sixty in 7.5 seconds.
The Bottom Line
While the Kia Sorento has an edge in horsepower, safety is the number one thing people look for in a vehicle, and given its poor record in comparison to the Mazda, the CX-5 is definitely the winner.
