The Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Rav 4 are two popular crossover vehicles that have been selling well for years. Both models offer great styling, plenty of space for passengers and cargo, and a comfortable ride. If you're in the market for a new SUV/crossover vehicle and can't decide between these two models, we'll help by showing you what makes each vehicle stand out from the crowd.
Design & Style
- Exterior Design
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 and the 2022 Toyota Rav 4 are available with 18-inch wheels. The Rav 4 is available with 19-inch wheels. Both vehicles have 17-inch tires as standard equipment, while the Rav 4 comes with 18-inch tires on higher trim levels. Higher trim levels of each vehicle come equipped with larger alloy wheels wider than their lower trim counterparts.
The CX-5 has a more aggressive design than the Rav4, making it look more athletic and sportier, but both models' overall dimensions are nearly identical. It is just under two inches shorter than its competitor but has an advantage in width (about 1/2 inch). The CX5 also sits about an inch lower off-road than its competitor, which gives it a slightly lower center of gravity, making it feel more stable during cornering.
- Interior Design
The interior of the CX-5 is also a pleasant surprise. It has many great features, like the available heated steering wheel and leather upholstery. There's a ton of room in the backseat, too, which is important if you often have many people riding with you. The driver's seat is comfortable but not overly cushy-it feels sturdy and safe without making it hard to get out of your car at the end of a long day.
The Rav 4 has plenty going for it as well; its interior design is very similar to that of its new sibling, so if you liked what you saw with this new version, chances are good that you'll love what's inside your Rav 4 as well!
Technology & Safety
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 features a more advanced suite of driver assistance and safety technology than the 2022 Toyota Rav 4. Both cars offer standard automatic emergency braking, but only the Mazda also provides lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, which automatically maintains a set distance from traffic ahead. Additionally, both vehicles come with blind-spot warning systems; however, only the Mazda includes a rear cross-traffic alert.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is one of many vehicles on our list to feature Apple CarPlay compatibility for its infotainment system; however, it does not offer Android Auto support as many other models do-it's worth noting that Apple CarPlay is compatible with Android phones as well as iPhones.
Performance
The Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota Rav 4 have similar engine performance specs. A 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®-G engine powers the Mazda CX-5, while the Toyota Rav 4 is driven by a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force Engine (D4). Both engines produce 185 horsepower with either front or all-wheel drive (FWD or AWD). The Mazda also has more torque than the Toyota, but only slightly: 200 pound/feet vs 192 pound/feet.
Both vehicles are capable of reaching 60 mph in about 8 seconds, making them average for this class of vehicles, but not fast enough for most people to consider them sport utility vehicles (SUVs) or crossovers like their name suggests they should be.
The Bottom Line
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a better car. It's more fun to drive, cheaper, and more fuel efficient. If you're looking for an SUV that can handle almost anything you throw at it and still have enough room to fit your family, this is the vehicle for you. The 2022 Toyota Rav 4 is a good car, too but not as good as its competitor from Mazda.
