The 2022 Mazda CX-9 is a fabulous SUV with stellar safety scores, standardized all wheeled drive and impeccable road manners. But what happens when it faces off against the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, an SUV which can tow six thousand pounds and has a spacious interior with lots of safety gear?
Design & Style
The Nissan Pathfinder offers three rows with the ability to seat eight. It is currently in its fifth generation. Though it still retains the same engine as its predecessors, it now includes the latest safety functions with a new transmission and electrical steering mechanism. Drivers will have access to 7 different drive modes which can be used off or on road.
The CX-9 is the biggest sport utility vehicle sold by Mazda to date, and can seat up to 7. It too has 3 rows and is popular for its exceptionally tuned handling. Passengers within the interior will enjoy nappa leather upholstery, metallic trim and the ten inch high resolution touch displays which will provide infotainment. Once the third row has been folded down, you'll have access to thirty eight cubic feet that can be utilized for storage.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda CX-9 does everything right when it comes to safety. As a result, it has earned the auto industry's highest safety awards, which are a five star rating from the NHTSA and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Its features include automated emergency brakes, adapted cruise control, blind area monitoring, and airbags just to name a few. Amenities within its cabin include seats that can be heated or cooled, the option of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and keyless start.
The Nissan Pathfinder has yet to be crash tested by the NHTSA or IIHS. However, it does come with many of the same countermeasures as the Mazda CX-9, so one would assume it's safe to drive. However, until an official review is forthcoming, it will remain unproven. Its ProPilot Assist enables hands free operation, but only for fifteen seconds. Amenities within its cabin include keyless start, keyless entry, and eight inch touch display, the option of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and satellite radio.
Performance
The Nissan Pathfinder uses a V6, 3.5 liter engine that can generate 284 horsepower with the ability to cruise from zero to sixty in just 6.7 seconds. The Mazda CX-9 is powered by a turbo 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 227 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in 7.2 seconds.
The Bottom Line
The Pathfinder has an edge in horsepower and seats one extra passenger. However, the Mazda CX-9 has vastly superior safety credentials while the Pathfinder lacks a hybrid option and its nine speed transmission has a tendency to wait within its higher gears, which makes the Mazda CX-9 the better vehicle.
