The 2022 Subaru Ascent is a large sport utility vehicle that is notable for its fine interior, outstanding crash test reviews and standardized AWD. But how does it compare to the 2022 Mazda CX-9, another large SUV which has received acclaim for its Signature trim, impeccable safety scores, and engaging riding experience?
Design & Style
The CX-9 is Mazda's flagship SUV, and seats up to 7 people. It is a 3 row crossover that offers standardized all-wheel drive for every variant. Its handling is well tuned and the exterior features refined curves which drape over each of its four corners. The cabin is also elegant with a horizontal layout that features polished metallic trim, wood and nappa style leather seats.
The Ascent is Subaru's flagship SUV, and is also a crossover that seats 8 people. Its latest features for the year include the Onyx trim, leather synthetic seats and twenty inch wheels. The Ascent has an elevated front end, simple tail and headlights, and a cabin with vertical vents along with wood grain trim here and there. It has about nine inches worth of ground clearance which makes it suitable for off-road handling.
Technology & Safety
The Subaru Ascent has received excellent reviews from both the NHTSA and IIHS, capturing a five star rating and Top Safety Pick award respectively. It is equipped with every modern feature, such as adapted cruise control, automated high beams, activated lane control, airbags and excellent external vision. Luxuries within its cabin include the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, powered seats that can be cooled or heated, and keyless start.
The Mazda CX-9 has earned the same safety accolades as the Ascent, including a perfect 5 stars NHTSA rating and Top Safety Pick award. It comes with all the same features, including standardized automatic emergency brakes and all-wheel drive. Luxuries inside its cabin include a ten inch touch display, powered leather seats that can be heated or cooled, and a powered sunroof. Â
Performance
The Mazda CX-9 is powered by a turbo 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 227 horsepower with superb acceleration in straight lines. The engine works with the automatic six speed transmission that efficiently transfers power to all 4 wheels. It can blaze from zero to sixty in just over 7 seconds. The Subaru Ascent is powered by a flat 4, 2.4 liter engine that can generate 260 horsepower. This enables it to accelerate from zero to sixty in 7 seconds.
The Bottom Line
The Subaru Ascent seats one extra passenger; but it's a tight fit in back. It has more horsepower but the 0 to 60 acceleration time for both SUVs is nearly identical, and both are tied when it comes to safety. The biggest weakness of the Ascent however is its small touchscreens, small third row and lackluster warranty, which makes the Mazda CX-9 the winner.
