The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a sporty and compact convertible with superb handling, manual transmission and standardized Apple CarPlay. But how does it compare to the 2022 Subaru BRZ, a sporty coupe which has received praise for its agile handling, engaging interface and efficient tires?
Design & Style
The Subaru BRZ has two doors yet can seat four passengers. Its newest features for the year include the option of slippery or stick tires, a modified suspension, stiffer structure and the option of the Limited or Premium models. Additionally, its flat 4 engine has been given a power boost. Within the cabin, passengers will be presented with an eight inch touch display with aluminum pedals and seats that are well bolstered.
Visually, the Mazda MX-5 Miata shares a number of similarities with the BRZ. The latest editions for this year include torque vectoring which is brake based for the internal back wheel. It seats 2 passengers and comes with either a soft or hard top configuration. The hard top is retractable and can be opened with a simple button push that takes about thirteen seconds.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda MX-5 Miata comes with all the modern safety features, such as emergency automated brakes, blind area monitoring, adapted headlights, and automated high beams. Perks within its cabin include Android Auto, Bluetooth, keyless start, telescoping steering, air conditioning and leather steering wheel. Those that purchase the Club edition will get Bilstein dampers, Bose audio system with nine speakers and seven inch darkened wheels with a rear spoiler.
While the Subaru BRZ comes with various safety features, such as adapted headlights, blind area monitoring, and even knee based airbags, it does not offer emergency automated brakes as a standard feature, which is quite disappointing. Amenities within its cabin include satellite radio, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, keyless access, and bucket style seats that have suede inserts. Subaru's proprietary Starlink connection service is also included in some additions.
Performance
The Subaru BRZ is fast and agile. It is equipped with a flat 4 engine which is 2.4 liter and capable of generating 228 horsepower, with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 7 seconds. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is powered by an inline 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 181 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in just six seconds.
The Bottom Line
Though the Subaru BRZ officially seats four, those who've actually test driven it know that the backseats are essentially useless except for children, and though it has more horsepower, the Mazda has better acceleration time and fuel economy. The Subaru's hardened cabin plastics, lack of standardized emergency brakes or a turbo option makes the Mazda MX-5 Miata the winner.
