The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the world's most affordable cars. Its compact size makes it excellent for densely populated urban areas where parking space is in short supply. But how does it compare to the 2023 Mazda 3, a car which has received praise for its uncompromising swagger, superb handling, and well-appointed cabin?
Design & Style
The Mazda 3 is available in both hatchback and sedan form. Both look fabulous, especially when purchased in the Carbon Edition which comes with eighteen inch wheels and reddish leather upholstery. It has a sports tuner look which will appeal to high school and college kids, due to its aerodynamic frame and grille which is forward canted. The seats within the cabin provide a wide adjustment range and can be cooled or heated when desired.
The Mitsubishi Mirage can also be purchased in the form of a hatchback. Its exterior manifests an oval shape while passengers within the cabin will be presented with a seven inch touch display. The dashboard is well organized and the seats feel comfortable. The controls are conveniently situated and simple to learn and use.
Technology & Safety
The Mitsubishi Mirage is equipped with tech that is designed to prevent crashes. Unfortunately, the IIHS still wasn't impressed, and gave it a Marginal rating for its frontal overlap test. It does however come with automated emergency brakes, which is one of its most important protective functions. Amenities within the cabin include Bluetooth, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, climate control and leather steering.
The 2023 Mazda 3 has captured the automotive industry' most prestigious accolades, including the Top Safety Pick award and a five star NHTSA rating. It is equipped with all the safety functions found in the Mitsubishi and more, including a camera with surround view, headlights which are adaptive, parking sensors for the front and rear, and emergency automated brakes. Luxuries within its cabin include a sound system with eight speakers, keyless start, nine inch touch display, rotary controller, sunroof and powered seats.
Performance
Those that purchase the Mazda 3 Turbo will get a 2.5 liter engine that is capable of generating 227 horsepower with 310 pounds of torque, enabling it to accelerate from zero to sixty in less than six seconds. The Mitsubishi Mirage is powered by a 3 cylinder engine that can generate just 78 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
The Mitsubishi's only advantage is its low price. Visually the Mirage resembles a car that was manufactured during the 1990s, its safety score is abysmal, and anyone who tries to drive it on a freeway is literally gambling with their lives, making the Mazda 3 the winner.
