The 2022 Ford Escape is a crossover SUV with outstanding value, a great safety record and solid fuel efficiency. But is all this enough to beat the 2023 Mazda CX-5, a moderately sized SUV with standardized all-wheel drive, turbo performance and an impressive presentation?

Design & Style

The Mazda CX-5 can hold five passengers and displays crisp lines and refined curvature. Updated LEDs can be seen in front, as well as revised alloy wheels. Passengers within its cabin will be presented with a horizontal dashboard where all the controls and buttons are conveniently situated including a ten inch display, and the materials include nappa style leather with wooden trim.

The Ford Escape is also capable of seating five passengers. Its exterior is liquid smooth with elegant curves and impressive wheels. Within the cabin, the engineers decided to save money by including low end plastic trim beneath the horizon line, yet the touch display is high resolution and simple to use. The seats are comfortable and about 38 cubic feet has been reserved for cargo space.

Technology & Safety

The Ford Escape is highly respected when it comes to safety. Not only has the NHTSA given it a five star rating, but the IIHS has bestowed the Top Safety Pick, which is their highest accolade. However, the vehicle has been dinged for its headlights, which were described as being Marginal. Amenities within its cabin include keyless start, panoramic sunroof, power tail gate, acoustic glass and premium audio from B&O.

The Mazda CX-5 matches the Ford Escape when it comes to safety credentials. It too has received a perfect five star NHTSA rating as well as the Top Safety Pick. The difference is that it didn't receive a Marginal score for its headlights. Its countermeasures include a camera with surround view, the ability to monitor blind spots, cruise control that is adaptive, lane control and emergency automated brakes.  Luxuries within its cabin include ambient illumination, parking sensors, heated/cooled seats, climate control and heated steering.

Performance

Those that want maximum performance from the Mazda CX-5 will purchase the Turbo variant which has a turbo four engine that can generate 227 horsepower with 310 pounds of torque. The Ford Escape comes with a turbo 3, 1.5 liter engine that can generate 181 horsepower with the option of front wheel drive.

The Bottom Line

Both SUVs are well matched when it comes to safety credentials and interior luxuries. However, the Ford Escape uses cheap plastic in its cabin, the seat cushions are short and its Marginal headlights could become a hazard if they malfunction at night making it harder for drivers to see, and it is these factors which make the Mazda CX-5 the winner.
