The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is a moderately sized SUV which has received acclaim for its fantastic appearance, sporty handling and turbo power. But what happens when it goes up against the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric, a compact SUV with lots of safety features, affordability and an affable driving experience?
Design & Style
The Hyundai Kona Electric has been totally redesigned for 2022. The dimple style grille which was seen in previous editions has been removed, and it now has a smoother front with revised headlights. Passengers within the cabin will be presented with eight inch touch displays and the dashboard is completely functional with all the buttons and controls being situated in convenient locations.
The Mazda CX-5 has impressive lines and curves. It is capable of seating five passengers and new LEDs can be seen in the front headlights. The engineers also revised the alloy wheels and passengers within the cabin will be treated to a horizontal arrangement with a high resolution touch display and seats covered in nappa style leather. 3 seat belts can be seen In back and it has lots of space for luggage.
Technology & Safety
Safety is paramount in every automobile, especially SUVs which are designed to carry entire families. The Mazda CX-5 doesn't disappoint since it has captured the industry's highest awards including the Top Safety Pick via the IIHS and a NHTSA five star rating. Its passengers will be protected by cruise control which is adaptive, blind area monitoring, automated emergency brakes and a camera with surround view. Luxuries within its cabin include a ten inch touch display, the choice of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, climate control, heated seats and ambient lights.
The Hyundai Kona Electric is equipped with many of the features found in the Mazda. It too has lane control that is active, emergency automated brakes, and the ability to monitor the attention of drivers as well as parking sensors for the rear. Luxuries within its cabin include dual USB ports in front, the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and sunroof.
Performance
The Hyundai Kona Electric is powered by an electrical motor that is capable of generating 201 horsepower with 290 pounds of torque. It can accelerate from zero to sixty in about 7.6 seconds. The Mazda CX-5 is powered by a turbo 4 engine that can generate 227 horsepower with 310 pounds of torque, and can accelerate from zero to sixty in 7.5 seconds.
The Bottom Line
The Mazda CX-5 has more horsepower and bigger touch displays than the Hyundai, and the Kona also fails to offer all-wheel drive, its screen doesn't provide wireless connectivity with smartphones, and its geographic availability is limited, making the Mazda CX-5 the winner.
