The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a fabulous SUV with stellar safety scores, standardized all-wheel drive and an enjoyable driving experience. But how does it compare to the 2022 Dodge Durango, a crossover SUV with a formidable engine, poised chassis and outstanding technology?
Design & Style
The Durango has 3 rows and like many Dodge vehicles manifests a muscular appearance. The body sits on twenty inch wheels and the grille in front is broad and vertical. The dashboard within the cabin is driver focused and passengers will be presented with a touch display that is ten inches. The cabin displays a black color by default but buyers can upgrade to brighter hues which will make the interior look bigger than it actually is.
The CX-9 is capable of seating seven passengers and is the largest sport utility vehicle offered by Mazda. It too has 3 rows and a smooth exterior with elegant curvature. Passengers within the cabin will be presented with a ten inch touch display along with nappa style leather and wooden trim when they purchase the Signature edition.
Technology & Safety
The Mazda CX-9 is one of the world's safest SUVs, having received both the Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and a perfect 5 star rating from the NHTSA. It is equipped with every modern feature known to man, including lane control that is active, the ability to monitor blind spots, multiple airbags, automated emergency brakes and cruise control which is adaptive. Luxuries within its interior include powered seats that can be heated, keyless start, a Bose sound system with twelve speakers, leather upholstery, power tailgate and sunroof, and the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The Dodge Durango fails to impress when it comes to safety. Not only are its crash test grades lackluster, but it doesn't offer many standardized features. It only received a 3 star rating for its rollover protection with a Marginal grade for its frontal overlap crash test. It does have automated emergency brakes and luxuries within its interior include climate control, wireless updates, navigation system, powered seats and leather upholstery.
Performance
This is where the Dodge Durango shines the brightest. Even the most basic model comes with a V6, 3.6 liter engine that can generate 300 horsepower and is capable of towing up to 6200 pounds. The Mazda CX-9 is equipped with a turbo 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 227 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
While the Dodge Durango has lots of horsepower, it also comes with a terrible safety record. And since sport utility vehicles were designed primarily to transport families, only a fool would risk the lives of his or her children by buying the Durango when they can purchase the Mazda CX-9 instead which has won multiple awards for its safety credentials.
